Plans to Empower Special Office to Review Cyber Security Threats

SAN ANTONIO, TX – House Ways and Means chairman Harvey Hilderbran (R-Kerrville), a conservative Republican candidate for Texas Comptroller, today pledged to the citizens of Texas that if he is elected he will protect the sensitive, personal data held by the office of the Comptroller of Public Accounts.  This pledge is the sixth item in Hilderbran’s ten-point Performance Pledge to the voters of Texas.

“One of the most solemn responsibilities of the Texas Comptroller is to protect the confidential data of Texans and I will do everything in my power to ensure that the office meets that responsibility,” said Hilderbran.  “Identity theft is costly, inconvenient and stressful, and reduces worker productivity.  The office of the Texas Comptroller must manage sensitive data according to the data industry’s best practices – never again giving public access to personal information by accident. The office must also stay ahead of cyber security threats. When I am elected, I will take steps to do just that.”

The Comptroller’s office is in possession of sensitive personal information for millions of Texans. The office cannot tolerate any laxness in its handling of data related to personal information.

In 2011, a data breach occurred in the Texas Comptroller’s office, putting the social security numbers and dates of birth of more than 3.5 million Texans at risk.

Due to previous, well-reported leaks of data, the current Comptroller has taken significant steps to make sure such a breach never occurs again. Harvey Hilderbran will continue the data security measures already implemented at the office, as he also empowers a special office to continually review cyber-security threats and re-evaluate technologies and procedures to ensure that personal information stays private.
